Trip details
Nearshore ice fishing around the Apostle Islands is all about diversity. Anglers can target lake trout, brown trout, splake, and even coho salmon. But that’s not all—burbot, herring, whitefish, and the occasional northern pike also make appearances, adding plenty of action to the day. Using a mix of jigging and tip-ups, anglers can test their skills against aggressive trout while still having a chance to land other species lurking under the ice. The relatively shallow waters near the islands often concentrate fish, making these trips a great option for those looking to experience the thrill of Lake Superior ice fishing. Our nearshore ice fishing trips focus on two main techniques: jigging and tip-ups. Jigging: This active fishing method is perfect for targeting aggressive fish like splake, brown trout, and coho salmon. Using a mix of jigging spoons, tube jigs, and soft plastics, we mimic the movements of baitfish to entice strikes. Watching a fish charge your lure on sonar and feeling that hard hit is what makes jigging so addicting. Tip-Ups: For anglers who enjoy a more laid-back approach, tip-ups are the way to go. We set these rigs with live bait, like minnows or smelt, and position them near likely fish-holding areas. The sight of a tip-up flag shooting up is pure excitement, and the suspense of not knowing what’s on the line adds to the fun.
