Fishing the Bay of Green Bay: Walleye & Brown Trout from Spring to Winter If you’re an angler looking for year-round excitement, the Bay of Green Bay on Lake Michigan is the place to be. This fishery, spanning from Door County in the north to the Fox River in the south, offers incredible opportunities to chase trophy walleye and brown trout nearly every month of the year. Interested in chasing both species? Our Green Bay fishing charters can be booked as walleye trips, brown trout trips, or a combo trip to catch both! From the post-spawn frenzy in April to late-fall giants in December, the Bay transforms with each season, making it a fishing hotspot you can’t afford to miss. And don’t worry about the weather – we are the only charter service in the area that runs a boat with a heated cab for those cold spring or early winter mornings on the water. Let’s break down what makes it so special, how fish movements shift throughout the year, and the tactics that’ll keep your rod bent no matter the season. Our fishing season kicks off just after ice-out, targeting staging walleyes as they prepare for the spawn. We follow their movements through summer and into their fall feeding patterns, ensuring exciting fishing opportunities throughout the year. Our Bay of Green Bay fishing charters typically launch out of Marinette, Wisconsin, but other launches can be arranged – just give us a call! April – Post-Spawn Frenzy As the ice melts and water temperatures rise, walleye and brown trout move into the Bay’s tributaries, like the Fox and Oconto Rivers, to spawn. By mid to late April, the spawn wraps up, and fish return to the Bay hungry and aggressive. This is prime time to target trophy walleye near river mouths and on shallow flats. May & June – Transition to Summer As spring warms into early summer, fish spread out across the Bay. Walleyes hold along rocky drop-offs, weed edges, and mid-depth flats, while brown trout patrol shorelines, structure, and nearshore reefs. July & August – Summertime Patterns Summer can challenge some anglers, but the Bay’s walleye and brown trout fishing remains strong if you know where to look. Walleyes often suspend in deeper water, and browns shift to slightly cooler, deeper areas near rocky points and reefs. September & October – Fall Feast As water temperatures begin to cool, fish become more active, feeding heavily to bulk up for winter. Walleyes move into shallower water during the day, and brown trout can often be found near rocky shorelines, tributary mouths, and reefs. November & December – Late-Season Giants The transition into late fall and early winter offers some of the best trophy fishing of the year. Walleyes and browns take advantage of baitfish schools, making this a prime time to land your personal best. As ice begins to form in December, tributaries and nearshore areas can still produce incredible fishing.
